How to Refinish and Refurbish Your Old Deck
Do you have a deck that has fallen on hard times and needs a thorough overhaul to bring it back to its former glory?
Follow these simple deck refinishing refurbishing steps
and check the magic effect they have on your deck.
·
Inspect
the deck: Clean the deck with a power blower or broom and visually inspect the
surface for severely cupped, split, or rotting wood deck boards. If you see
any, the boards will have to be replaced.
·
Clean the
deck: Use wood cleaners to clean the deck if it has a clear or semi-transparent
wood stain. These cleaners are very effective for removing mildew stains and
ultra-violet caused bleaching of the wood. If a deeper deck refinishing
refurbishing job is necessary, use a power washer to strip the paint. Be
cautious of the pressure. For softwood like cedar, do not go above 600 psi.
·
Sand the
deck: After the deck is power washed, sand the deck with a sander and selected
grits. But be sure that the deck is dried thoroughly before doing so. The pores
of the wood are now ready to receive the final protective finish.
·
Stain the
deck: For the best results, use good quality oil-based penetrating exterior
semi-transparent stain. Ensure that the stain will match the wood species of
the deck.
·
Stain
application: This is the critical part of deck refinishing refurbishing. If
you want the wood to show through, apply an oil-based semi-transparent stain.
Buy a solid opaque stain if you want the finish to look like paint. All stains
should be water repellant. Avoid varnish or polyurethane as they degrade under
the sun’s UV rays.
